Gatehouse Academy Canada connects with local adolescent drug rehabilitation center.
June 5, 2005
The Gatehouse Canada campus held a BBQ for the local adolescent drug rehabilitation center (aka the Smith Center). Minutes after the smith kids arrived the fun began. There was canoeing, fishing and swimming. The very first activity was everyone cramming into the sauna. For dinner there were hamburgers, hotdogs, home baked deserts and soft drinks served. Of course the most important part of the BBQ was not the fun and food. Backing all the events that took place was the connections being made between the young kids from the Smith Clinic and the Gatehouse residents. There were conversations on what recovery was, and how it is possible to have fun in sobriety.
The visit came to a close after the Gratitude meeting was held. There were two local 12 step members that attended the meeting, one was around the age of thirty and the other seemed to be in his late fifties. Having the different generations of people working together with the common goal of sobriety had a powerful effect on the meeting. Putting it in perspective, the very fact that there were so many people in one room from so many different parts of the country all gathered for the same reason made it clear that this event was no mistake.
