Methamphetamine use & awareness in young adults and What Causes Sores on the Faces of Meth Users?

I came across this article about the use of meth by young adults. It talks about how aware young adults are of the danger of meth.  The problem is most young people know the dangers but feel it will never happen to them. Please email any questions such as “What causes sores on the faces of meth users?” and we will do our best to answer them.

One in six Arizonans 18 to 24 years old has tried meth, according to a new statewide survey.

I have started to view the current Meth epidemic as a blessing in disquise. I know some many young adults who have started out using this drug recreationally and quickly get hooked. The downside is that lives are lost, families are detroyed, mental damage occurs, and crimes are committed- but for those who do seek recovery and stay sober, meth is often something they become grateful for. It may have taken them years to get help for their drug addiction if they had not used meth, but since it brought them to such a concrete bottom so early on, they are able to sustain long term sobriety.

I tried meth for the first time when I was 17. I started to only use it on weekends when I went to visit my older sister. No big deal right ? Then at 19 I used it daily just to lose weight. Well, I lost weight all right along with my friends, family, and my 2 year old son. I have always had the ability to quit any drug cold turkey which I thank God for every day, but I would have given anything to have the opportunity to come to a place like Gatehouse. The support that these young adults get here is amazing. The 12 step program here really helps these young adults not only deal with their disease but the tools to live life free of this disease. The kids are starting drugs younger and younger these days and it is very scary out there for them. While I have been meth free for 10 years the drug still affects my mother. I hope that anyone who has a loved one addicted to meth can help that family member before it is too late.

Nathan I read your blog and concluded we have to take the hopefull approach. It is a major tennant of the 12 step program. As a profesional educator, coach, parent, and long time member of this community I have seen that downside cost(more particularly with meth than any other drug) and consider it one of the blessings of working at Gatehouse. In fact I have 2: being more informed; and hoping to play a very small part in the process.

I always saw those drug commercials about meth and thoought that would never happen to me. I saw myself as different than those people in the commercials. After a year or two of heavy meth use I saw the destruction that it created with me and my family. Meth wasn’t my dru of choice but it brought me down quickly.
