When celebrities say, I do not understand drug rehab, do we listen?
When a celebrity like Kid Rock says he “does not understand rehab” it’s hardly surprising. However, what may be startling is how fast these sentiments, that drugs and alcohol aren’t really dangerous and that rehab isn’t really necessary, can spread like wildfire.
People often say that drugs aren’t dangerous because they’ve seen people try them without suffering visible signs of harm. Why is that? It’s important to remember that as human beings we are each unique, and no two people are exactly the same. That’s why when two people take the exact same drug, they can be affected by it in two completely different ways. Even non-prescription medications have different affects on different people. For some, Advil works better than Tylenol and vice-versa. For others, neither of those medications is helpful. However, medical professionals have tested how these drugs affect people in general to determine the safety of the drugs and how they can be used to improve a person‘s health or well-being.
In the same way, scientific research has shown how illegal drugs like cocaine and marijuana react with the human body, in general. It’s true that the effects may be different for each individual, but overall these drugs have been found to decrease a person’s health and not improve it. The euphoria that comes with drug abuse may cause someone to feel good, but that kind of happiness is a temporary illusion – and the damage done to the body is not, even if you can‘t see it.
There’s a big difference between scientific facts and the myths people would like to believe are true about drugs and alcohol. It’s important for us to start being honest about drugs, alcohol, and the rehab process. Just as it’s true that drugs and alcohol affect each of us differently, rehab is also a very personal, unique experience. Activities such as attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are steps in the recovery process and part of a person’s rehabilitation. To understand rehab, realize that it isn’t just a facility you go to or a program you enroll in to get help. Rehab is a lifelong journey of recovery.

You can’t knock rehab until you’ve tried it — and even then, every rehab center is different. It’s hard to judge them all based on a single experience. Every center has their own methods, approaches, and treatments. What works for one person does not work for everyone. To be successful in any rehabilitation environment, one must always be open minded and willing to learn.
