What Are Residential Drug Treatment Centers?

Residential treatment centers are located in residential settings and aim to ease the transition from rehab to real life. These centers promote personal and social responsibility, as well as teach individuals how to adjust behaviors to fit into general society. Many residential locations reward individuals based upon their adherence to the established rules and growth within the curriculum.

Counselors instill effective social skills in group therapy sessions, which emphasize healthy relationships and stress management. In Gatehouse’s residential facility, young adults live in an apartment home-type setting and are responsible for cooking and cleaning for themselves. This freedom to manage life independently teaches the students how to take care of themselves. Residential centers promote the idea that a healthy, balanced lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with sobriety.

Despite their high success rate, fewer and fewer health policies are extending coverage for residential treatment centers. Because methadone treatment is cheaper, many government policies are only in support of these drug-substitution programs. The UK’s Addiction Recovery Foundation asserts that residential treatment is very effective for certain addicts and should not be abandoned by national health policies. Although methadone clinics are considered an easier and less costly form of rehab, they do not show the same positive results as long-term centers. Many residential programs now have to rely upon private clients to keep their doors open.
