Recreation

Recreation

There are numerous recreational activities for residents. Karate and yoga classes are available throughout the week. Jogging, walking trails and swimming are available on campus or at the nearby ranch. Hiking and other activities like skateboarding are part of the resident's day. Numerous other sports related activities are available in town and can be worked into a resident's schedule.

Equestrian

Gatehouses' Equestrian offering is an integral part of the curriculum and is available to all residents. Residents come to us with varying levels of skill and interest and the response is a comprehensive equestrian offering ranging from basic Western style riding to involvement in thoroughbred racing. We are one of the few facilities that has sported a polo team at one time. First-time riders are taught the basics of grooming and care while those more experienced will be handed the opportunity to be critically involved in the development of a thoroughbred racehorse.

The involvement of horses at Gatehouse is just another way that excellence is brought to the residents and they have a chance to be engaged in the pursuit of an activity that can bring a sense of joy to their lives.

Yoga

Yoga originated in India, where it remains a spiritual tradition and is seen as a means to enlightenment. The yoga program at Gatehouse has been developed and run by Margaret Konopacki, owner of Evolve Yoga and Meditation Center. A master yoga teacher, Margaret has traveled the world learning different techniques of yoga. At Gatehouse she teaches a combination of Sivananda, Ashtanga, Karma yoga and “12-step” yoga. This activity is incorporated into the residents schedule to aid the addict in finding balance for their mind, body, and spirit.

Karate

Gatehouse residents are taught authentic Okinawan karate by Sensei Drake Sass of Morning Star Karate, Inc. By keeping a tradition that has withstood the test of time, Gatehouse residents are taught Matsumura Seito Shorin-ryu, one of the original systems from Okinawa.

Students are also taught the basic principles of defensive karate as well as the moral principles of karate. In the moral aspects of the training, students are given the guidelines of character development through respect, self-control, leadership and confidence.

Sensei Drakes goal with the residents is to inspire and motivate them to such a degree, that there is an excitement that extends into their day to day lives. And then carry that energy to other new residents.

Gatehouse residents have also competed on local, state and national level competitions. Students consistently place 1st place through 4th at every competition. The following are some of the highlights:

2004 Palm Spring Regional- 5 first place championships

2004 AZ State Champions- 4 first place championships

2004 USKA Nationals- 4 first place championships

2005 AZ State Champions- 4 State championships

2005 USKA Nationals- 4 first place championships
