Haven Oaks Campus

This extended campus program immerses participants in a totally different environment and places even more focus on the individual. The campus can house up to twelve residents. With this small of a community it becomes imperative to show up, be accountable, and be responsible. Residents qualify for this campus once they have completed pre-determined treatment milestones at the Gatehouse Main Campus, usually between the 6 and 8 month mark.

The setting for the campus is on a beautiful thoroughbred horse farm located in Saratoga Springs nestled in the southern foothills of New York's Adirondack Mountains. The farm breeds racehorses and houses broodmares, foals, standardbreds, and thoroughbreds. Over their eight-week stay the residents are involved in a comprehensive horsemanship program, taught at the farm by owners and horsepersons Sue and Jim Hooper.

The typical day at Haven Oaks is very similar to the Gatehouse “Main Campus” schedule; work ethic, school, and even meditation are part of each day. In addition to these activities, the Haven Oaks Equine Program gives the individual the opportunity to learn exclusively about horses.

The recovering community of Saratoga and Fort Edwards provides a diverse cross-section of people of all ages embarking on the road of recovery. The residents attend daily 12-step meetings and work closely in the community participating in service work. This is the thrust of the Haven Oaks experience. Saratoga is a county that has an international reputation in the arts and entertainment - and of course, the breeding, training and racing of America's finest horses.

Recovery work must always come first and while at the farm it is the perfect time to develop the passion and understanding for what it takes to participate in recovery. The New York experience helps residents to develop the initiative for this. Prior to graduation, it is critical that Gatehouse Academy residents learn that they can be in recovery and stay sober anywhere in the world.

"New York is where I made the decision to commit to recovery. There was more intimacy and support since the number of residents there is so small. The group of women I worked so closely with motivated me and shared their experience, strength, and hope in a way I couldn't have gotten anywhere else."
