Prescription Drug Abuse Brings Increased Attention on Drug Rehab

Wickenburg, Ariz. – March 31, 2008 – There has recently been increased attention in the media regarding prescription drug abuse. In many ways this has been brought about by stories of celebrity abuse of prescription drugs. The death of Heath Ledger whose death was attributed to the abuse of prescription drugs raised the awareness of this problem for many people. Gatehouse Academy an extended care treatment center for young adults offers drug rehabilitation for all types of drug and alcohol addiction including prescription drugs.

Prescription drugs are those prescribed by a medical professional. Abuse of these types of drugs is a growing problem as it is estimated that 20% of the population in the US have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. This is especially true for young people as this group has little knowledge or experience with these drugs. A recent month long survey showed that 6% of youths aged 12 to 17 had tried prescription drugs for recreational use.

"It is so sad when you hear of problems associated with the abuse of prescription drugs" said Kent Sherman of Gatehouse Academy. "Many people are unaware of the risks involved in using drugs which have been legally prescribed by medical practitioners. There can be interaction issues with other substances, side effects and also addiction hazards. People using prescription drugs should always refer to their doctors and pharmacists to become fully educated on all potential problems"

Young people may have the perception that prescription drugs are safer and less addictive than street drugs - especially if they see family members and friends using these same drugs. The most common prescription drugs that are abused include narcotic painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin, and Demerol, sedatives and tranquilizers such as Nembutal, Valium, and Xanax, and stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Strattera.

"Potentially addictive drugs have their uses and can help treat many medical conditions" said Mr. Sherman. "The key to the prevention of addiction is through education on the physical and psychological dangers that may exist. This knowledge can help people understand the difference between appropriate use and abuse of these drugs"

Withdrawal from prescription drugs can be dangerous and it is advisable to seek medical help. Rehab from prescription drug addiction should focus on pharmacological and behavioral treatments. Long term treatments offer the greatest potential for full recovery.
