OxyContin Addiction

OxyContin is a narcotic used in cases of extreme, continuous pain. Cancer patients, for example, may be prescribed this medication. OxyContin’s use is legal by prescription only, and requires a physician to monitor its effects on the patient. When taken without a prescription, OxyContin can be very addicting and could cause harmful consequences on the abuser.

To have a drug addiction is to be dependent upon a drug that does not have a medicinal reason to be taken. Addicts find it difficult to stop using the substance due to both physical and mental withdrawal symptoms. In the case of an OxyContin addiction, regularly abusing the drug (using it for non-prescribed use) creates both a physical dependence and a psychological need. Those OxyContin addicts who suddenly stop or discontinue use of the drug may experience extreme cravings for the drug, restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, and diarrhea.

The drug’s full name is “Oxycodone continuous release”, which means the medication is supposed to act in the body over a sustained period of time. Abusers crush the tablets before consuming them, thereby crushing the time-release safety mechanism. This creates the sought after “high”, because the drug enters the body all at once. It is very dangerous, even fatal, to use such a medication in this unintended manner. Its mixture with other drugs and alcohol is known to cause death or other severe reactions, as well.

The troubling side effects do not hinder its misuse, even among teenagers and young adults. OxyContin addiction has lead to other negative, illegal behaviors including pharmacy robberies and forged prescriptions. Known on the street as Killers, Oxy, and OC, young people should be aware of and discouraged to start or experiment with this and other drugs, such as heroin or meth.

Addiction Treatment

Due to the serious nature of the drug, OxyContin addiction must be treated carefully. Addicts must undergo an OxyContin detoxification (detox) process, while being monitored by a physician for physical withdrawal symptoms. This process typically includes a slow decrease in the amount of the drug consumed, while managing the physical and psychological symptoms that occur during the process.

Treating addiction at a long term, extended care treatment center is recommended. Removing addicts from the pressures of peers and other life stressors is a key to ensuring there is no relapse or return to drug abuse. It is also important that the center has a detox program available through a qualified physician. The full treatment and recovery process will take time and being in a nurturing, optimistic environment helps encourage positive progression.

Treatment centers are especially beneficial for teenagers and young adults, who are at a developmental stage in their lives. Overcoming drug cravings and the psychological symptoms are just as important (if not more important) as conquering the physical symptoms. An appropriate treatment facility will allow the youth to grow, while empowering each individual to make good choices. Learning new skills that instill confidence and preparing for an adult life without drugs sets the stage for a successful recovery.
