Gatehouse Academy for Young Adults
Voice 1: You know my family told me whatever they needed to get me here, it was a life and death situation.
Voice 2: My parents wondered if I was even alive at some points.
Voice 3: When you took the drugs and alcohol away from me you really didn’t have much.
Hassyampa River Ranch sign.
Voice 4: Very strange when I first got to Gatehouse, I remember walking with my buddy up to the patio by the EC house and everybody asking me, where you from?
What’s your drug of choice?
Voice 5: When I was there I could just sit and feel comfortable and look at the cows and the horses, and maybe play a game of football with my friends.
Voice 6: Daily life in the casitas is a lot of fun.
Voice 7: Kinda like college, like a dorm room.
Voice 8: You got bunk beds and you gotta deal with roommates, but once you get going you live in the house for awhile and you got some friends, and it’s kinda like starting to feel like home because it does. You know it’s just like our dorm. A fraternity without the alcohol, you know and that was just another thing you know I learned in the casitas, how to have fun and get along without drinking.
Voice 9: I just wanted, it’s pretty amazing to come to a place like this and find young people in the same boat as me. Going through the same struggles and being able to relate with somebody, because I thought I was all alone when I got here, I thought I was the only one that suffered.
Voice 10: Looking back it was a real confidence booster to be able to take a couple college courses and credits in a sober environment.
Voice 11: How do I learn best? Especially sober. You know, because my only experience with college was when I was plastered or when class in general for the past seven years of my schooling, I was high.
Voice 12: There’s hope out there, certainly one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done in my life.
Voice 15: I wasn’t sitting in a hospital room anymore.
Voice 16: Going from group to group, being told what to do, being looked at as a patient, under a microscope, I mean I was a human being on this ranch and really the embodiment of the Western frontier and human spirit and I really just had a great experience on the ranch.
